Srinagar, January 4 (GNS): According to forecasters on Saturday, snowfall would occur in the majority of Jammu and Kashmir with “peak activity” from January 4 evening to January 5 (late night) and Monday morning.

An official from the local meteorological service informed GNS that “heavy snow” could fall during that period throughout the middle and upper regions of Kashmir as well as the Chenab Valley.

The official stated that “generally cloudy weather is expected with light to moderate rain (Jammu plains)/snow at most places of J&K with peak activity during (January) 4th (night) to 5th (late night)/6th morning.” He stated that beginning in the afternoon of January 6, there should be an improvement in the weather.

He said that from January 7 to 10, one can typically expect gloomy and dry weather. In a similar vein, he stated that from January 11 to 12, isolated to dispersed locations could expect mostly gloomy weather with mild snowfall. According to him, January 13–1 is typically dry.

“Travelers, tourists, and transporters are encouraged to make appropriate plans and adhere to administrative and traffic advisories,” he continued.

Meanwhile, the official told Global News Service that Srinagar recorded a low of minus 1.6°C which was 0.8°C above normal.

According to him, Qazigund recorded a low of – 6.6°C, which was 3.6°C colder than usual for the Valley’s gateway town.

He claimed that Pahalgam, a well-known tourist destination in the Anantnag area, recorded a low of minus 2.6°C and was 3.3°C above average. According to him, Kupwara reported a low of minus 2.2°C and Kokernag recorded a low of minus 5.8°C.

Jammu recorded a low of 8.7°C, Banihal 3.0°C, Batote 6.5°C, Katra 11.2°C and Bhadarwah 3.0°C, he added.

Chillai-Kalan, a 40-day harsh winter season that began on December 21, is engulfing Kashmir. Nor does it signal the end of winter. It is followed by a 10-day period known as “Chillai-Bachha” (baby cold), which lasts from February 20 to March 1, and a 20-day period known as “Chillai-Khurd,” which lasts from January 30 to February 19.
