As Chilai Kalan, the harshest phase of winter, concluded on January 29, a fresh spell of snowfall blanketed south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday, bringing much-needed relief to apple farmers.
The snowfall, which began early in the morning and continued into the afternoon, covered the region in a pristine white layer.
According to officials, the district’s plains received 3 to 4 inches of snow, while higher altitudes such as Heepora, Sedow, and Bohrihalan saw a heavier accumulation of 10 to 12 inches.
This fresh snowfall has ended a prolonged dry spell, easing the worries of thousands of apple growers in the region.
“The drop in temperature and snowfall are essential for the orchards, as they help prevent premature flowering and reduce early pest infestations,” said Tariq Ahmad, a seasoned apple cultivator from the area.
