The central government is planning to introduce a ‘Monthly Toll Tax Smart Card’, which will be valid across all toll plazas in India. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, is strongly advocating for this initiative at the pan-India level. The smart card is expected to provide discounts on toll tax, offering significant relief to frequent travelers and commercial vehicle operators.
How Will the Smart Card Work?
Currently, the government is working on implementing a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for toll collection. However, since its nationwide rollout will take time, the Monthly Toll Tax Smart Card will serve as an interim solution. Once the GNSS system is in place, vehicles will be fitted with satellite-based toll payment devices, which will automatically deduct toll charges based on the distance traveled. The smart card feature will also be integrated into this system, enabling regular commuters to pay tolls through a monthly pass instead of per-trip charges.

While specific details on exemptions for non-pass holders are yet to be clarified, ministry sources indicate that regular commuters will receive significant relief through the smart card scheme.
