The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has voiced concerns about disruptions to the screening of the film Emergency in the United Kingdom. The movie, starring Kangana Ranaut as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, depicts events from India’s Emergency period (1975-1977).

Protests led by certain British Sikh groups have occurred in cities like London, Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Slough, Staines, and Manchester. These groups view the film as “anti-Sikh,” resulting in demonstrations and interruptions during screenings.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the issue, stating that freedom of speech and expression should not be applied selectively. He added that the Indian government consistently raises concerns with the UK regarding anti-India protests and has urged the UK authorities to hold those disrupting screenings accountable.

The protests have caused screenings to be canceled, distressing audiences. While UK authorities have acknowledged the protesters’ right to demonstrate, they have faced criticism for not taking stronger action against the disruptions.

This isn’t the first challenge faced by Emergency. The film has also encountered protests in Punjab, India, and has been banned in Bangladesh due to its portrayal of historical events.
