In the first T20 International against England at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, Mohammed Shami’s absence from the Indian playing XI raised questions. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav, after winning the toss and opting to bowl, clarified the decision as tactical, saying, “We want to stick to our strengths.”
Shami, who last played for India during the 2023 ODI World Cup final in November, has been recovering from an ankle injury that required surgery and kept him sidelined for 14 months. Despite recently featuring in domestic cricket and participating in net sessions, his exclusion has fueled concerns about his fitness. Observers noted that Shami bowled during practice with a noticeable strapping on his left knee, which has led to speculation about lingering physical issues.
However, the team management has dismissed any major concerns. Speaking after the match, all-rounder Abhishek Sharma said, “The decision was made by the team management based on the conditions here.”
Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar highlighted Shami’s importance to the squad, saying, “With uncertainty around Bumrah, if Shami is fit and playing regularly, his quality and experience are invaluable.”
As the T20I series unfolds, all eyes will remain on whether Shami regains his spot in the playing XI, depending on his fitness and team requirements.
