Kupwara, Jan 31: A once-promising tourist cafeteria and gazebo at Galganzar Zachaldara, located at the foothills of Bangus Valley in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, have been left to decay due to official neglect.
Local residents report that the cafeteria, built nearly a decade ago, has never been handed over to the Tourism Department. “We were excited when the project began, but despite its completion years ago, it remains abandoned,” said Farooq Bhat, a local resident.
He expressed disappointment over the facility’s deteriorating state, pointing out damage to windows and glass panes by unknown miscreants. “A significant amount was spent on its construction, yet it has been left to waste. Proper maintenance could have made it a useful stop for visitors,” he added.
Situated along the Handwara-Rajwar-Bangus road, the cafeteria holds potential as a key rest point for tourists and a hub for local businesses. “If revived, it could provide employment opportunities by allowing locals to set up stalls,” noted Syed Imtiyaz, a youth from Rajpora Rajwar, Handwara.
District Development Council (DDC) Member Rajwar, Sulaiman Mir, acknowledged the issue, stating that not only the Zachaldara cafeteria but also tourist huts at Wader Balla and Wader Payeen remain neglected, inconveniencing visitors to Bangus Valley. “I am hopeful that restoration efforts will take place this year to make these structures functional for tourists,” he said.
Locals are now urging the authorities to step in and revamp these abandoned facilities, ensuring they serve their intended purpose in promoting tourism and local livelihoods.
