Electricity bills in Uttar Pradesh could see a rise due to the introduction of the “Time of Day” (TOD) tariff system. Under this new rule, electricity rates will vary depending on whether it’s day or night, potentially increasing domestic consumers’ bills by 10 to 20 percent.
This system, which is already in place for industries, will extend to all consumers starting April 1, 2025. As a result, households may face a 10 to 20 percent hike in their electricity charges.
A Legal Battle in the Works?
Awadhesh Kumar Verma, President of the Consumer Council, has expressed strong opposition to the new system. He has stated that they will fight the rule legally, aiming to prevent its implementation.
The Energy Department, however, argues that the TOD tariff will benefit consumers in the long run. The idea is that consumers can reduce their electricity costs by using appliances during off-peak hours, which could help manage demand more efficiently.
Consumers Voice Concerns
Despite these claims, many consumers are worried. One anonymous consumer voiced concerns, stating that the rule seems unfair and would only benefit the government, while increasing the financial burden on the public. With rising inflation, many fear that the price hike could become another strain on their budgets.
