Increase in Electricity Rates: The growing cost of electricity bills is a concern for everyone these days. In the meantime, Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi government is getting ready to shock its energy customers. Uttar Pradesh’s electricity costs will increase if this regulation is put into effect. In fact, residential consumers in the state can now be subject to Time of Day (TOD) tariffs. As a result, daytime and nighttime electricity rates will differ. As a result, it is anticipated that electricity users’ costs will rise by 20%. This system’s implementation has been suggested in the Multi Year Tariff Regulation 2025 draft. Only consumers in the heavy and small industries sector can currently use this system.

The Central Government has amended the Electricity (Customer Rights) Rules, 2020 as needed. This has been described as implementing the Time of Day (TOD) tariff system. One of its rules is to maintain a difference in the electricity rates between day and night. Customers in the heavy and small industry categories have been subjected to this method. Plans are in place to apply it to every customer starting on April 1, 2025.

Time of Day (TOD) tariff may be implemented in Uttar Pradesh in April

It is stated that this proposal may be approved if all goes according to plan. Under such circumstances, starting on April 1, all power users—aside from farmers—may be subject to a Time of Day (TOD) tariff. As a result, it is quite likely that electricity prices will rise. Under the new rate, electricity prices will be higher during peak hours—that is, from 5 p.m. until late at night—than during the day in all of Uttar Pradesh’s districts. In Uttar Pradesh, there are an estimated 3.45 crore people who use electricity. 2.85 crore of them are domestic customers. those people it will immediately impact. The state has 15 lakh farmer consumers. These farmers have been retained.

There was a preparation to implement TOD tariff in 2023

An attempt was made to implement the TOD system in the year 2023 as well. But there was opposition from the Consumer Council. Along with this, there was a threat of knocking the door of the court. In such a situation, the state government came on the back foot. This tariff was put on hold. Now preparations are being made to implement it again from April 2025. In this matter, the President of the Consumer Council, Awadhesh Kumar Verma, says that this TOD tariff will not be allowed to be implemented under any circumstances. If this happens, a legal battle will be fought.
