The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has imposed a one-day ban on trading futures and options contracts for nine prominent companies, citing a breach of market-wide position limits.
Key Players Affected by the Ban
The NSE has announced that stocks of companies like Punjab National Bank (PNB), Bandhan Bank, L&T Finance, and Aditya Birla Fashion have exceeded 95% of their market-wide position limits in derivative contracts. This has led to a temporary restriction on trading futures and options for these firms. Other companies under the ban include:
- Can Fin Homes
- Dixon Technologies
- IndiaMart Intermesh
- Manappuram Finance
- Mahanagar Gas
The ban is effective for January 27 and applies exclusively to derivatives trading. However, trading in the cash market remains open.
Why Is the Trading Ban in Place?
The trading restrictions are a result of the companies surpassing 95% of the market-wide position limit for derivative contracts. During the ban, no new positions can be opened in futures and options contracts for these stocks.
If traders attempt to open new positions despite the restriction, they may face penalties or disciplinary action. Notably, these nine companies were also included in the Futures and Options (F&O) ban list on January 24, and the restrictions have been extended because derivative positions were not sufficiently reduced.
What Can Traders Do During the Ban?
Traders are permitted to reduce their open positions in these stocks but are prohibited from increasing them. Any attempt to expand positions may result in penalties under the regulatory guidelines issued by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
The NSE’s decision reflects its commitment to ensuring stability in the derivatives market amid heightened volatility. Meanwhile, broader stock market indices, including the BSE and NSE, saw a downturn on Friday, January 24, amid ongoing fluctuations.
